The strongest challenger to U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah says new leadership is needed in Washington.
Former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist says Saturday at the Republican state convention in Sandy that he will focus on lowering the national debt.
The 37-year-old Liljenquist says Hatch has sponsored bills that make balancing the federal budget impossible.

Instead, Liljenquist says he will reform costly entitlement programs.
Liljenquist is seeking to defeat Hatch, who he says has had enough time to make a difference.
Hatch is asking Republican delegates to nominate him for a seventh term in office.
To win the nomination, a candidate needs to secure at least 60 percent of the vote from the 4,000 delegates. Otherwise, the top two finishers advance to a June 26 primary.
